- 10 most unusual/exciting

1. Blancas Nobles 2004 Barranco Oscuro, Contraviesa-Alpujarra (€10). This made mainly from the Vigiriega, a grape which has died out elsewhere on the peninsula, though it still grows in the Canary Islands. It only flourishes at high altitudes (over 1,000m) and this is one of the most individual white wines I've ever tasted in Spain.

2. Ariyanas Dulce 2004 Bentomiz, Malaga (€12 half bottle). One of the 'new wave' wines from this ancient region, made from Moscatel harvested from mountain outcrops of vines and unfortified, with three months in new Alliers. Delicate and delicious.

3. La Setera Crianza 2003, Arribes (€9). I listed this bodega last year as 'up and coming' and it's kept its promise. The Crianza is made from the Juan García which grows only in this corner of Castilla y León and some really bright and delicious fruit is starting to show through.

4. Castell Miquel Shiraz 'Stairway to Heaven' 2003, Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord (€15). This takes its name from an old stone stairway in the mountains of the north of Mallorca: cutting edge winemaking and a wine of spice, structure and power.

5. Lausos 2003 Can Rich, Ibiza/Eivissa (€25). Arguably the best winery on the island and this is its flagship wine made from organically-grown Cabernet-Sauvignon: perfumed, herby musky and delicious. Their other wines are equally good.

6. Mioro '1955' 2004 Colombard Privilegio del Condado, Condado de Huelva (€9). A fiftieth anniversary wine (hence the name) from this old-established bodega, barrel-fermented Colombard in French oak: lovely warm, ripe, almost chocolatey fruit.

7. Colonias de Galeón 2003 Roble, Sierra Norte de Sevilla (€10). This is a Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet-Franc and Tempranillo mix with 8 months in French oak: a 'herby' start on the nose but good structure and weight in the mouth.

8. Ben-Zuaique 2004 Vinos de Fondón, Laujar-Alpujarra (€4). This is a Tempranillo/Cabernet mix with 4 months in French oak, and quite simply a steal at the price: big soft Cabernet perfume on the nose, lovely rich Tempranillo fruit and a gentle finish - delicious.

9. Gavión Reserva 2001 Viña Escuderos, Zamora (€14). Made with grapes from 100-year-old Tempranillo vines with 27 months in American oak, this has a lovely, silky fruit with oaky 'notes' and an elegant structure.

10. Conrad Soleón 2003, Sierras de Málaga (€14). This is a brand new bodega growing Cabernet-Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot, all of which go into Soleón, which then gets 14 months in oak. The final cupaje is different every vintage, but the 2003 shows magnificent fruit with deliciously spicy oak, in perfect balance.
